How to Render a Brick Wall

Render turns a brick wall into a single continuous surface. Done properly it lasts decades. Done badly it cracks, blows off the wall and traps water behind it. Here is the full sequence, from substrate to final float.

How to Render a Brick Wall, Step by Step

To render a brick wall, clean and repoint the brickwork, prime it, then build up a keyed scratch coat, a level coat and a finish coat to around 15 to 20 mm total. Each coat must cure before the next, and the render needs to stay damp while it sets.

Rendering is a cementitious coating system. Sand, cement, lime and polymer modifiers go on across two or three coats over a prepared substrate, and the renderer finishes the surface by hand. Brick is one of the best substrates to work onto: porous, well keyed and dimensionally stable, which is why rendering over existing brickwork remains one of the most cost effective ways to transform a tired exterior.

Step by step

  1. Assess and clean the substrate: Check the brickwork is sound, dry and free of salt deposits. Rake out any failed mortar joints and repoint them, then wash the wall down and let it dry fully.
  2. Prime and set out: Apply a bonding agent or slurry coat where needed, fix beads to corners and openings, and set screeds so the finished surface runs true.
  3. Scratch coat: The first structural coat, roughly 8 to 10 mm, which you key with a scratcher so the next coat has something to grip.
  4. Level coat: The second coat brings the wall flat and plumb. This is where the wall comes straight, not in the finish.
  5. Finish coat and cure: A thinner top coat, which you float or sponge to the chosen texture and then keep damp while it cures.

On a single storey house this runs seven to fourteen days depending on size, weather and access. Two storey work runs two to three weeks once you factor in scaffolding. Most of the elapsed time goes on waiting rather than working, because each coat has to cure before the next one goes on.

Preparation and Mixing the Render

Preparation decides the outcome. Anyone learning how to render a brick wall finds this out quickly, because almost every render failure traces back to the substrate rather than the mix.

Salts and efflorescence

Old brickwork often carries the white salt bloom that appears as moisture moves through masonry. Rendering over active salts will push the render off the wall in time.

Painted brickwork

Paint film breaks the bond between render and masonry. It has to come off first, or a mechanically fixed lath system takes its place.

Movement junctions

Where an extension meets the original build, the two move at different rates. Mesh in the base coat is what stops that showing as a crack.

A traditional mix is sand, cement and hydrated lime. A common starting point for the base coats is six parts sand, one part cement and one part lime, with the finish coat softened slightly so it is never stronger than the coat beneath it. That rule matters: a hard coat over a soft one will crack. The lime is not optional filler either. Application Techniques and Curing

Lay each coat on with a hawk and trowel, then rule it off with a straight edge to take the high spots back. Key the scratch coat while it is still green. Rule the level coat, let it firm, then close it up. The finish coat goes on thinner, and a float brings it up once it has taken up enough to hold texture.

Timing is the skill. Work the surface too early and it tears. Leave it too late and it drags and shows every trowel mark.

That window shifts constantly with temperature, wind and the suction of the wall, and it is the part that takes years to read reliably.

Curing rules that decide the result

  • Cement render gains strength through hydration, not through drying out.
  • Render that dries too fast in an Adelaide summer will craze and stay weak.
  • Keep new render out of direct sun and wind for the first days.
  • Mist it down over the first 48 hours in hot weather.
  • Never render onto a wall in frost or driving rain.

Can you render straight over painted brick?

Not reliably. The paint film sits between the render and the masonry, so the render bonds to the coating rather than the brick. You have to strip the paint back, or use a mechanically fixed lath system instead. We assess this on site before quoting.

How thick should render be on a brick wall?

Traditional cement render over brick is usually 15 to 20 mm across two or three coats. Acrylic and polymer modified systems go on much thinner, around 3 to 5 mm, and generally suit lightweight substrates rather than solid brick.

How long before you can paint render?

Cement render should cure for at least 28 days before you paint it, so the alkalinity settles and moisture leaves the wall. Painting too early is a common cause of peeling and patchy colour.

Why is my render cracking?

Fine crazing usually points to a mix that was too strong or dried too quickly. Straight line cracks normally follow a substrate joint or a movement point that missed its mesh. We repair most hairline cracking in place without re-rendering the elevation.
