Rendering Adelaide

What we are

A craft of
tool, hand
and texture.

Textured render is render finished with a deliberate decorative pattern — not a smooth wall, not a coating, but a hand-tooled surface where the texture itself is the architecture.

The same base systems as our standard rendering work — acrylic, cement and polymer-modified — are applied across two to three coats, then the finish coat is worked by hand with a sponge, trowel, hessian bag, scratch tool or specialty texture float. Every wall is unique because every hand on a trowel is unique.

Across Adelaide, Textured Render Adelaide projects span new builds, brick refresh and re-render work, two-storey facades, pool surrounds and commercial fit-outs. Texture rendering Adelaide-wide rewards the kind of architecture that reads from across the street — facades meant to be seen, not just sealed.

We specify and apply all five core texture systems, matched to substrate and brief. No subcontractors. Every layer trowelled by hand, every texture finished in raking light.

Services

Five textures,
one craft.

Texture is what makes a render read as architecture. We apply five core texture systems — each with a distinct tool, pattern and aesthetic — chosen to match the substrate, the home and the era of the build.

Sand Finish

Fine quartz aggregate worked with a plastic float. The most subtle texture — a soft grain that catches light without dominating the wall.

Sponge Finish

Tight orange-peel pattern from a foam-rubber sponge float. The classic Adelaide finish — versatile, forgiving, ages beautifully.

Repairs & Patching

Visible hand-trowel marks left intentionally — sweeping, organic, never repeated. Reads as deeply considered architectural finish work.

Bagged Finish

Hessian bag rubbed over wet render to leave a soft, mottled surface. Period-correct for cottage, character and heritage Adelaide homes.

Scratch Finish

Combed or raked vertically or horizontally with a texture tool. Strong directional pattern — ideal for modernist and brutalist facades.

Bespoke Match

Texture matched to an existing wall for extension, repair or heritage work. Sampled on site against the original until the match reads true.

Rendering Adelaide

The Why

Why texture?

A flat-rendered wall reads as architecture. A textured wall reads as considered architecture. Texture catches light in a way smooth render cannot, hides the small imperfections every brick exterior carries, and ages with character rather than against it. Done by hand, it is the difference between a coated wall and a finished one.

  • Custom-tooled finish — every wall hand-worked, no two identical

  • Architectural depth — texture catches raking light all day

  • Hides imperfections — wraps over uneven brick and old joints

  • Wide pattern range — from subtle sand to bold scratch

  • Repairs and texture-matching available — hand-applied finishes mean exact matching cannot be guaranteed, but most patches integrate well

  • Ages with character — patina improves with weathering

Process

From substrate
to texture.

A typical Textured Render Adelaide project takes seven to fourteen days for a single-storey facade; two to three weeks for two-storey. Most of the time is curing between coats. The texture itself is finished in the final hours — when the topcoat is wet, every minute counts.

Site visit

We assess substrate, exposure, height and existing texture. Honest advice on which texture system suits the wall and the brief.

Sampling

Sample boards in the proposed texture and colour, reviewed on site in the actual light. Tooled on a real wall before any commitment.

Substrate prep

Wash, prime, mesh joints and movement points, set up scaffolding. The unseen work that determines the final texture.

Base Coats

Two to three render base coats, carefully applied, each cured before the next. The flatness of the base is what makes the texture sit clean.

Texture Coat

Final coat applied wet, then hand-tooled with sponge, trowel, bag or scratch tool. Texture finished in raking light, never in shadow.

Compared to

Why not just flat render?

A frequent question. Flat render and textured render solve different problems — flat render is about minimal architectural surface, textured render is about character, depth and pattern. They look, age and read very differently across the same brief.

Care

Living with
textured walls.

A properly applied textured render asks little. We provide a care card with every project — the short version is below.

None required. An annual hose-down keeps west-facing walls clean. That is usually enough.

Soft-wash with low-pressure water and a diluted exterior cleaner. Common on south-facing walls in shaded gardens.

Hairline cracks are repaired and texture-matched in place. Hand-applied finishes mean exact matching cannot be guaranteed — most repairs integrate well, but some patches remain visible depending on the age and weathering of the original render.

Painted textured render benefits from a refresh every 10 to 15 years. Pre-tinted acrylic systems often go longer.

High-pressure cleaning. It strips the topcoat and forces water behind the render. Use low pressure or no pressure.

For Henley Beach, Glenelg and the Fleurieu, an annual freshwater rinse lifts salt and extends the finish life.

Textured Render Adelaide projects are priced per square metre and vary by texture system, substrate condition, height and access. Sand and sponge finishes begin in the mid range; trowel, bagged and bespoke heritage textures sit higher because of the additional hand-tooled work. Scaffolding for two-storey work is scoped separately. Every project is quoted bespoke after a site visit.

Flat render is hand-floated to a smooth, mineral surface — architectural and minimal. Textured render is the same base system finished with a deliberate decorative pattern: sand grain, sponge marks, trowel sweeps or bagged texture. Flat render reads as architecture; textured render reads as character. Both use the same core acrylic or cement base coats. See our parent Rendering Adelaide page for the full system breakdown.

Yes. Painted brick is one of the most common substrates for textured render in Adelaide. We assess the existing paint, scuff and prime where needed, mesh any movement points, then build the render up with a base coat and a hand-applied texture topcoat. The transformation on a tired painted-brick exterior is significant.

We apply five main texture systems: sand finish (fine grain, contemporary), sponge finish (orange-peel, traditional), trowel finish (hand-trowel marks, architectural), bagged finish (hessian-rubbed, cottage and heritage) and scratch finish (combed or raked, modernist). Each is hand-applied and can be matched to existing texture for repair or extension work.

Yes. Texture matching is one of the more skilled parts of the trade — every applicator’s hand is slightly different, every wall ages slightly differently. We sample on site against the existing wall, adjust the tool and pressure, and only proceed when the match reads as close as possible. Hand-applied finishes mean exact matching cannot be guaranteed — most extensions and repairs integrate well, but some patches remain visible depending on the age and weathering of the original render.

Most modern textured render systems — including the acrylic systems we use — come pre-tinted with mineral pigments and do not need a separate paint coat. The colour is built into the topcoat. For traditional cement-based textured render, painting after curing is standard. We specify pre-coloured for new builds and either approach for re-render work.

Yes. We render two-storey homes regularly. Scaffolding is scoped separately at quote stage and adds to project cost. Higher-elevation work also requires longer curing windows for some systems — we factor that into the timeline at the start.

A properly applied textured render lasts 20 to 30 years before significant intervention is needed. The render layer can last decades; the topcoat colour or paint typically refreshed at 10 to 15 years. Texture itself does not wear off — the render becomes part of the wall. Hairline cracks can be texture-matched in place, though hand-applied finishes mean exact matching cannot be guaranteed.

Yes. Hebel AAC panels, polystyrene/EPS cladding and blue board (fibre cement) are all standard substrates for textured render in Adelaide. We use polymer-modified acrylic systems specifically designed for these substrates, with reinforcing mesh embedded in the base coat to bridge panel joints.

Yes. Texture rendering Adelaide-wide spans Greater Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula as standard. Regional South Australia and interstate projects are quoted with travel separately.
