What it is

A surface of
cement, resin
and patience.

Microcement is a thin cementitious coating — a blend of high-performance cement, polymer resins, fine quartz aggregates and mineral pigments — applied by hand across four to six layers and sealed to a finish.

Unlike traditional concrete, microcement is only two to three millimetres thick and bonds directly over almost any sound substrate: existing tiles, concrete, screed, gyprock, plywood and timber. There are no joins, no grout lines, and no demolition required to install it.

Across Adelaide, we apply microcement to bathroom floors and walls, kitchen splashbacks and benchtops, full living-area floors, stairs and outdoor patios. It is the seamless, modern counterpart to our Venetian plaster work — architectural in feel, contemporary in palette, and built to live with.

The Family

Five systems,
one material.

Microcement is a family of related systems — the same base cement and resin chemistry, formulated and finished differently for the surface it lives on. From wet-area floors to feature walls, each system is matched to substrate, traffic and finish.

Wall Microcement

Fine-grain microcement for feature walls, splashbacks and joinery. The most affordable system, finished matte or satin.

Floor Microcement

Reinforced with fibreglass mesh for traffic-grade durability. Sealed in polyurethane for living areas, hallways and stairs.

Wet-Area Microcement

Specified to AS 3740 for showers and ensuites. Two-part liquid membrane, sealed microcrete above.

Concrete-Effect

Coarser aggregate and trowel movement to emulate off-form concrete. The look without the slab — and a fraction of the weight.

Exterior Microcement

UV-stable formulation for facades, courtyards and pool surrounds. Withstands Adelaide sun, salt and seasonal movement.

The Why

Why microcement?

Microcement does what tile, slab and paint cannot: it covers a whole bathroom, kitchen or floor in one continuous, joint-free surface — only millimetres thick, bonded directly to what is already there. It is the answer when the brief is seamless, contemporary, and finished by hand.

  • Seamless — no grout lines, no joins, no transition strips

  • Thin profile — only 2–3 mm, no door height adjustment needed

  • Goes over the existing substrate — tile, concrete, screed, timber

  • Waterproof — full bathroom and shower applications, no sealer required for waterproofing

  • Hand-applied — every layer trowelled, never sprayed

  • Low maintenance — wipes clean, re-sealable, repairable in place

Note: the sealer applied to microcement floors and walls is for cleaning and finish preservation, not waterproofing — the microcement itself is waterproof.

Process

From substrate
to sealed floor.

A typical microcement bathroom takes seven to ten days; a whole-floor application, eight to fourteen. Most of the time is preparation and curing — the actual trowel work is unhurried but efficient. Every layer is applied by hand.

Site visit

We walk the room, assess the substrate, the light and the brief. Honest advice on what microcement will and will not do for the space.

Sampling

Bespoke sample boards in the actual material and colour. Reviewed in your space and light, before commitment.

Substrate prep

Cleaned, primed, levelled. For wet areas, a two-part liquid membrane goes down first. The unseen work that determines the outcome.

Mesh & layers

Fibreglass mesh embedded in the base coat, then four to six microcement layers trowelled by hand, each cured before the next.

Sealing

Two to three coats of two-pack polyurethane for floors and wet areas; wax or matte sealer for walls. Sealed to spec.

Compared to

Why not just tile?

A frequent question. Microcement and tile solve different problems — tile is a finished product laid in pieces, microcement is a continuous surface built on site. For the same bathroom or floor, they look, age and live very differently.

Care

Living with
microcement.

A properly sealed microcement surface is among the easiest finishes to live with. We provide a care card with every project — the short version is below.

Sweep or vacuum. Damp microfibre with warm water for spills. No special products needed.

Squeegee after showering, as you would natural stone.

Most marks lift with a damp cloth. Stubborn marks respond to a pH-neutral floor cleaner.

Bleach, ammonia and abrasive scrubs. Steam mops on sealed floors. Dragging unprotected furniture.

Floors and wet areas benefit from a re-seal every 1–3 years depending on traffic. Walls rarely need attention — every 8–10 years if at all, and only when wear shows. A re-seal is a single-day visit; no removal, no replacement.

Microcement in Adelaide is priced per square metre and varies by system, substrate condition and access. Wall systems begin in the mid range; floor systems and wet-area systems sit higher because of the additional waterproofing, mesh reinforcement and sealing required. Every project is quoted bespoke after a site visit.

Yes. One of microcement’s defining advantages is that it bonds over almost any sound substrate — existing tiles, concrete, screed, gyprock, plywood and timber — once primed and reinforced with mesh. This is why microcement is often chosen for renovations: no demolition, no removal, no skip bins.

Yes — and microcement is waterproof in itself, with no sealer required to keep water out. We do apply a sealer (typically a two-pack polyurethane on floors and wet areas, wax or matte sealer on walls), but its purpose is to keep the surface easy to clean and to preserve the look of the finish over time, not to provide waterproofing. Applied across full bathrooms, showers, niches and ensuites in Adelaide, finished to AS 3740 wet-area standards.

Floors and wet areas, with regular re-sealing every 1–3 years, will have a very long lifespan — the microcement itself is durable and the sealer is what wears with daily use. Walls rarely need attention in the future unless physically damaged. Re-sealing, when due, is a single-day visit — no tear-out, no replacement.

Microcement is typically applied at 2 to 3 mm total thickness across four to six hand-applied layers. This is one of its defining advantages — it adds almost no height to floors, so there is no need to adjust doors, skirting or cabinetry when going over existing tile.

Cracks come from substrate movement or skipping mesh reinforcement. Our process embeds a fibreglass mesh in the base coat across all floor and wet-area applications — that mesh is the difference between a microcement that lasts and one that fails.

A typical microcement bathroom takes seven to ten days from start to finish. A whole-floor application can take eight to fourteen days depending on size and substrate. Most of that time is curing between layers — the actual application is unhurried but efficient.

Yes. Sample boards are prepared in the actual material and colour and reviewed in your space, in your light, before any commitment is made. Microcement looks different in raking light versus direct light — sampling on site is the only honest way to choose.

Both are hand-applied, layered surfaces — but the chemistry and use cases differ. Venetian plaster is lime-based and most often applied to walls and ceilings; microcement is cement-and-resin-based and built for floors, bathrooms and surfaces that take wear. Most homes we work on use both.
