What it is

A bathroom
without joints.

A microcement bathroom replaces tiles, grout and silicone with a single, continuous mineral surface — applied by hand from floor to wall to niche to bench in a single, seamless skin.

The system itself is the same one we use across our wider microcement work — a polymer-modified, fibreglass-mesh-reinforced cementitious coating, applied in two to three coats by hand. What makes a bathroom different is what sits underneath it: a fully waterproofed substrate to AS 3740 standards. The microcement layer is then applied over the membrane — fully waterproof in itself, with no reliance on the topcoat sealer to keep water out. The polyurethane sealer is added last to keep the surface easy to clean and protect the finish over time.

Across Adelaide, microcement bathroom projects are our most-requested specialty work. Ensuites, main bathrooms, powder rooms, walk-in showers and freestanding tub surrounds — all finished without a single grout line, tile join or silicone bead. The architectural payoff is significant.

No subcontractors. Every coat trowelled by hand. Every bathroom finished in raking light.

The family

Six surfaces,
one bathroom.

A microcement bathroom is rarely just one surface. We apply the same finish across every wet-area element — floors, walls, niches, vanities and benches — so the bathroom reads as a single, continuous architectural space.

Shower Walls

Walk-in, frameless and open showers finished without tiles, grout or joints. Sealed to AS 3740 over a fully waterproofed substrate.

Bathroom Floors

Slip-rated to R10 or higher on request. Fine aggregate in the topcoat gives soft texture underfoot. Continuous from wall to floor.

Vanities & Benches

Integrated vanity tops, splashbacks and floating benches finished in microcement — bespoke joinery with no visible joins.

Niches & Recesses

Shower niches, soap recesses and integrated shelves — all finished in continuous microcement. No tile cuts, no silicone returns.

Bath Surrounds

Freestanding tub surrounds, drop-in bath skirts and stepped tub platforms — sculptural, monolithic, fully waterproof.

Powder Rooms

Smaller spaces where the seamless effect is most architectural. Floor-to-ceiling microcement, dramatic single-tone or feature colour.

The Why

Why microcement?

A tiled bathroom is a beautiful thing. But it is also a grid of grout lines, silicone joints and small surfaces that ask for cleaning, re-grouting and re-sealing across their lifetime. A microcement bathroom replaces all of that with a single, continuous, hand-applied surface that becomes the architecture of the room.

  • Seamless — no grout lines, no joints, no silicone returns

  • Hygienic — nothing for mould or bacteria to hide in

  • Architectural freedom — curbless showers, integrated niches, floating benches

  • Over-tiles option — can apply directly over existing tiles, no demolition

  • Durable — substrate waterproofed to AS 3740, microcement waterproof in itself, surface long-lasting

Process

From substrate
to seal.

A typical microcement bathroom Adelaide project takes seven to fourteen working days from start to final seal. Most of that time is curing — waterproofing, base coats, finish coats and sealer all need to set fully between stages. Every step hand-applied, never sprayed.

Site visit

We assess substrate, plumbing, waterproofing and the existing bathroom layout. Honest advice on scope, timeline and over-tile vs full demolition.

Sampling

Sample boards in your proposed colour and finish, reviewed on site in the actual bathroom light. Before any commitment is made.

Substrate & waterproof

Substrate prepared, fibreglass mesh embedded, waterproofing membrane applied to AS 3740 and certified before microcement begins.

Microcement Coats

Two to three coats of microcement, hand-trowelled. Each cured before the next. Fine aggregate in the floor topcoat for slip rating.

Wet-area Seal

Final polyurethane topcoat applied in two coats, cured between. The topcoat keeps the surface easy to clean and protects the finish — the microcement beneath is already waterproof. Bathroom usable 48 hours after the final coat.

Why not just tiles?

A frequent question. Flat render and textured render solve different problems — flat render is about minimal architectural surface, textured render is about character, depth and pattern. They look, age and read very differently across the same brief.

A frequent question. Tiles and microcement solve different problems — tiles are individual units joined with grout and silicone; microcement is a single continuous surface. They look, age, clean and renovate differently. The investment is different too.

Care

Living with
microcement.

A properly applied and sealed microcement bathroom asks little. We provide a care card with every project — the short version is below.

Wipe down with warm water and a soft microfibre cloth. The seamless surface means no grout lines to scrub.

pH-neutral bathroom cleaners only. Avoid acidic, alkaline or abrasive cleaners — they damage the polyurethane sealer.

Soft sponge and warm soapy water. Microcement is non-porous when sealed — nothing penetrates the surface.

The topcoat is the renewable layer — refresh every 1–3 years on bathroom floors and wet zones depending on use, and rarely if ever on walls (every 8–10 years if signs of wear show). The microcement itself is durable for the long term; only the topcoat is renewed.

Bleach, citrus-based cleaners, and abrasive scourers. Sharp impact damage from dropped objects can dent the surface.

Microcement Bathroom Adelaide projects are priced per square metre and vary by scope, substrate condition and finish. A typical ensuite begins in the mid range; full bathrooms with shower walls, floor, niches and vanity sit higher. Demolition, waterproofing and tiled-area removal are scoped separately. Every project is quoted bespoke after a site visit.

Yes — and microcement is waterproof in itself, not waterproofed by the sealer. The bathroom is first waterproofed to AS 3740 with a certified substrate membrane (a regulatory requirement for any wet area in Australia). Microcement is then applied over the membrane as a fully waterproof finish layer. A polyurethane topcoat goes on last — its job is to keep the surface easy to clean and to preserve the look of the finish, not to provide waterproofing.

Yes. Shower walls are one of the most popular microcement bathroom Adelaide applications. We apply over a waterproof membrane, build up two to three coats by hand, then seal with a wet-area-rated polyurethane. Showers, including walk-in and frameless designs, finish beautifully — no grout lines, no tiles, no joints.

Yes. Microcement bathroom floors are slip-rated, fully sealed and seamless. We use a fine aggregate in the topcoat to give the floor a soft texture that meets Australian slip-resistance standards (R10 or higher on request). The floor flows up the walls or steps without joints — exactly the seamless look that defines this finish.

A typical ensuite takes seven to ten working days from site visit to final seal. A full main bathroom runs ten to fourteen days. Most of this is curing time between coats — the actual trowelling work is unhurried but efficient. We coordinate around plumbing, electrical and joinery trades on site.

Yes. One of the strongest reasons clients choose this finish is that microcement bathroom Adelaide projects can often go directly over existing tiles — no demolition, no skip bin, no dust. The tiles are cleaned, the grout lines bridged with mesh, then microcement is applied over the top. The savings on demolition and tiling are significant.

Microcement itself is a long-lasting surface — the material can last decades. The topcoat is the renewable layer; refresh every 1–3 years on floors and wet zones depending on use, and rarely if ever on walls. There are no grout lines to discolour, no tiles to chip, no silicone to mould.

Cracks come from substrate movement or skipping mesh reinforcement. We embed fibreglass mesh in the base coat and prepare the substrate so it moves as a single body before microcement is applied — that preparation is the difference between a bathroom that lasts and one that fails. Where small cracks do appear over time, repairs are possible but exact colour and texture matching cannot be guaranteed on hand-applied finishes.

Microcement is supplied pre-tinted with mineral pigments — UV-stable, fade-resistant and naturally toned. Bespoke colour matching is available on request, and sample boards are prepared in your space before any commitment so colour and finish can be approved in context.

Yes — and this is one of the strongest design reasons to choose this finish. Microcement is seamless, so curbless walk-in showers, fully recessed niches, integrated benches and continuous floor-to-wall surfaces are all possible without grout lines or joins. The architectural freedom is significant. See our parent Microcement Adelaide page for the full system breakdown.
