What it is

A craft of
cement, polymer
and weather.

Rendering is a cementitious coating system — sand, cement, lime and polymer modifiers — built up across two to four coats and finished by hand to give an exterior wall its final architectural surface.

Hand-floating render across Adelaide for over a decade, we work across new builds, brick renovations, lightweight cladding systems (Hebel, polystyrene, blue board) and architectural facades. We work in both traditional cement render and modern acrylic and polymer-modified systems — chosen by substrate and brief, not by what is fastest.

Done well, render is not a coating that sits on a wall. It is a continuous mineral surface, three to twenty millimetres thick, that becomes part of the building’s structure. It weathers slowly, repairs in place, and gives a brick or panel exterior a depth no paint can match. It is the exterior counterpart to our Venetian plaster and microcement work.

The Family

Five systems,
one craft.

Our rendering services Adelaide-wide cover a family of related systems — different chemistries, different thicknesses, different substrates. We specify and apply all five, matched to the wall it lives on and the brief it serves.

Acrylic Render

Polymer-modified system, 3–5 mm thick. Pre-tinted, crack-resistant — the workhorse for new builds, Hebel and polystyrene.

Cement Render

Sand, cement and lime applied 15–20 mm thick across two or three coats. Breathable, traditional, painted after curing.

Polymer-Modified Render

Cement render with acrylic polymers and fibreglass mesh. The choice for movement-prone substrates and joints.

Sand & Texture Finish

Fine, medium or coarse aggregate finish. Trowelled or sponged for tactile depth — the texture coating layer over a sound base.

Hand-Floated Render

Smooth, hand-trowelled finish — no spray, no roller. Our signature system for considered architectural facades.

The Why

Why render?

Render does what paint cannot: it transforms an exterior. A solid mineral surface, bonded to the wall, that takes weather, takes time, and gives a brick or panel facade the architectural depth it was built for. Done by hand, it ages quietly — a finish, not a coating.

  • Weather protection — UV, rain, salt and frost across the Hills

  • Thermal mass — rendered walls hold and release heat slowly

  • Crack-bridging — flexible polymer systems span substrate joints

  • Substrate-versatile — brick, Hebel, polystyrene, blue board

  • Repair-friendly — hairline cracks patched in place, no full re-render

  • Architectural — transforms a brick exterior into a continuous facade

Applications

Process

From substrate
to finished facade.

Rendering Adelaide projects typically take seven to fourteen days for a single-storey house; a two-storey build runs two to three weeks. Most of the time is preparation and curing — render needs to set fully between coats. Every layer hand-floated, never sprayed for the finish coat.

Site visit

We assess substrate, exposure, height and access. Honest advice on which render system suits the wall and the budget.

Sampling

Sample boards in the proposed render and colour, reviewed on site in the actual light. Before any commitment is made.

Substrate Prep

Acid-wash brick, prime, mesh joints and movement points, set up scaffolding. The unseen work that determines the outcome.

Base Coats

Scratch coat and level coat applied in two to three layers, each fully cured before the next. This is what a render lasts on.

Finish & Seal

Hand-floated finish coat with optional sand or texture, finished with a UV-stable sealer or topcoat to specification.

Compared to

Why not just paint?

A frequent question, especially for older brick homes. Render and paint solve different problems — paint is a thin coating that follows the wall’s existing surface; render is a built-up mineral system that becomes the wall’s surface. They look, age and cost very differently.

Care

Living with
rendered walls.

A properly applied render asks little. We provide a care card with every project — the short version is below.

None required. An annual hose-down keeps west-facing walls clean. That is usually enough.

Soft-wash with low-pressure water and a diluted exterior cleaner. Common on south-facing walls in shaded gardens.

Repaired in place by the studio. We match texture and colour — most cracks blend back invisibly.

Painted cement render benefits from a refresh every 10 to 15 years. Pre-tinted acrylic systems often go longer.

High-pressure cleaning. It strips the topcoat and forces water behind the render. Use low pressure or no pressure.

For Henley Beach, Glenelg and the Fleurieu, an annual freshwater rinse lifts salt and extends the finish life.

Rendering Adelaide projects are priced per square metre and vary by system, substrate condition, height and access. Acrylic render begins in the mid range; traditional cement render and hand-floated finishes sit higher because of the additional coats and time on the trowel. Scaffolding for two-storey work is scoped separately. Every project is quoted bespoke after a site visit.

Yes. Solid red brick, double-brick and brick veneer all take render well once sound and clean. We acid-wash and prime first, mesh any movement points, then build the render up in two to three coats. Rendering is one of the most cost-effective ways to transform a tired brick exterior into a contemporary architectural facade.

A properly applied render lasts 20 to 30 years before needing significant work. The render layer itself can last decades; the coloured topcoat or paint is typically refreshed at 10 to 15 years. Hairline cracks are repaired in place rather than redone, though hand-applied finishes mean exact colour and texture matching on patches cannot be guaranteed.

Cement render is the traditional system — sand, cement and lime, applied 15 to 20 mm thick across two to three coats, then painted. Acrylic render is a modern polymer-modified system, applied thinner (3 to 5 mm) and often comes pre-coloured. Cement render is more breathable and traditional; acrylic render is more flexible and crack-resistant. We use both depending on the substrate and brief.

Yes. Lightweight cladding systems — Hebel AAC panels, polystyrene/EPS boards and blue board (fibre cement) — are rendered with acrylic or polymer-modified systems specifically. We embed reinforcing mesh into the base coat to bridge panel joints, then finish with a hand-floated or textured topcoat. Each manufacturer has detail specifications we follow exactly.

A typical single-storey house render takes seven to fourteen days depending on size, substrate and system. Two-storey homes and architectural builds run two to three weeks. Most of that time is curing between coats — actual application is unhurried but efficient. Larger architectural facades are scoped on site.

Yes. Hairline cracks, blown render, water damage and patch repairs are regular work for us. We match existing texture and colour wherever possible, though hand-applied finishes mean exact matching on repairs cannot be guaranteed — some patches blend cleanly, others remain visible depending on the age and weathering of the original render. Severe water damage or large-area failure usually needs a full re-render of that elevation. We assess and advise honestly on the likely outcome before commencing.

Both options exist. Acrylic render systems can be supplied pre-tinted in a wide colour range — applied as the final finish, no separate paint coat needed. Traditional cement render is typically painted after curing with a high-quality acrylic exterior paint. Pre-coloured render lasts longer between refreshes; painted render gives more colour flexibility.

For most homes, yes. Paint on bare brick highlights the joint pattern and weathers visibly within five to ten years. Render gives a continuous architectural surface, adds thermal mass to the wall, and lasts two to three times longer. The investment is higher up-front but lower across the life of the building.

Texture coating is a thin decorative finish — typically 1 to 3 mm — applied over an existing rendered or painted wall. It adds texture and refresh, but it is not a structural render. True rendering is a full system: substrate prep, base coat, level coat and finish, built up to 5 to 20 mm depending on type. We do both, and recommend honestly which one suits the wall.

Yes. We work directly with private homeowners, builders, architects and interior designers across South Australia. Specification documents, sample boards and trade pricing are supplied to architects and builders on request. We schedule with the build program and coordinate with painting and trim trades on site.

Yes. We render across Greater Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula as standard. Regional South Australia and interstate projects are quoted with travel separately.
