Factors That Determine Venetian Plaster Cost
Venetian plaster in Adelaide commonly runs from around $110 per square metre for a matte Marmorino finish up to roughly $280 for a highly polished Stucco Veneziano. In short, the rate follows the number of coats and the amount of burnishing, while surface preparation sits as a separate line.
First, it helps to know what you are paying for. Venetian plaster combines slaked lime, marble dust and mineral pigment, which a plasterer lays in three to seven thin coats and burnishes by hand. However, the material is only a modest share of the total. The rest is time on the trowel, and of course that time changes with the finish you choose.
Step by step
- The finish system: Marmorino is a matte to low sheen lime finish, generally three to four coats. Stucco Veneziano, by contrast, takes more coats and a hard burnish to reach a marble gloss.
- Surface preparation: Certainly the most underestimated line in any quote. We cover it in detail below.
- Area and layout: Rate per square metre falls as area rises. For example, a single feature wall carries the same setup, masking and sampling as a whole room, but spreads it across far fewer metres.
- Access and height: Similarly, stairwells, voids and double height walls need trestles or scaffold, which adds time before a trowel touches the wall.
- Colour and sampling: Finally, bespoke colour matching to a fabric, stone or an architect’s specification takes sampling time, and deep saturated tones sometimes need an additional coat.

Understanding Surface Preparation Requirements
Venetian plaster is unforgiving of what sits beneath it. Because it sits only a couple of millimetres thick and then takes a polish, it magnifies every flaw in the substrate rather than hiding it. Raking light across a burnished wall will certainly reveal a defect that paint kept invisible.
Level Set Beyond Paint
Therefore plasterboard joints and fixings need taking to a high level set, well past the standard a paint finish would accept.
Sound Existing Coatings
First we check existing paint for adhesion, then strip any unsound coating. Similarly, we flatten back repairs, patches and previous texture.
Primer and Suction
Finally, an appropriate primer, often a keyed base coat, gives the plaster grip and an even rate of suction across the wall.
On new build walls that already meet a good standard, preparation is a modest part of the job. However, on older walls, or where a previous finish has to come off, preparation can approach the cost of the plaster itself. Therefore we cannot give a firm price over the phone, and we look at the actual wall before quoting.

For context, Venetian plaster cost is higher than paint up front and lower than most quality wallpaper installations, while lasting decades longer than either. A painted wall runs on a five to eight year recoat cycle. By contrast, a burnished lime wall develops patina, takes a spot repair, and lasts rather than needing replacement.

Why can you not quote Venetian plaster over the phone?
Because preparation is the variable. Two rooms of the same size can differ substantially depending on substrate condition, previous coatings, access and the finish you choose. A site visit, however, takes about twenty minutes and produces a firm figure.
Is Venetian plaster cheaper than wallpaper?
For most quality wallpaper installations, yes, once you include hanging and preparation. It also lasts considerably longer, since most people replace wallpaper within a decade, whereas owners repair a burnished lime wall and keep it.
Does a feature wall cost more per square metre?
Usually. Setup, masking, sampling and mobilisation stay much the same whether the job is one wall or a whole room, so on a small area those fixed costs spread across fewer square metres.
