Venetian Plaster Unley.

In an Unley renovation, a Venetian plaster feature can connect existing character with a new interior scheme. The finish should respond to the actual wall and the room's light.

Hand-applied Venetian plaster finish by Protex Plastering, Adelaide

What It Is

A Craft Of Lime,
Marble And Time.

Venetian plaster is a lime and marble-dust finish, applied by hand in many fine layers and burnished with a steel trowel until the surface holds depth and light.

Originating in Renaissance Venice and refined over five centuries, Venetian plaster, also known as Marmorino, Stucco Veneziano or polished plaster, gives interior walls a depth no paint or wallpaper can match. Each finish is hand-applied in three to seven layers, with the trowel marks themselves becoming part of the surface.

Venetian Plaster Unley projects: We assess the wall before choosing a sheen or colour for an Unley project. A hand-applied finish can be restrained on a broad wall or more expressive in a smaller feature area.

Planning a Venetian finish in Unley

An Unley project may involve rooms finished at different times. Before adding a decorative surface, consider the transition at doorways, corners and adjacent painted walls. The detail at those edges influences whether a polished treatment feels integrated or visually separate.

Protex can prepare samples in the proposed colour and sheen, then view them alongside existing materials. The visit also identifies uneven or unstable substrate that needs work first. This keeps the quote tied to the actual renovation rather than to an assumption that every wall is ready for plaster.

The Family

Six finishes,
one material.

Venetian Plaster Unley offers a family of lime and marble-dust finishes. The choice runs from chalkier Marmorino to deeper polished plaster. For an Unley room, sample boards help compare the finish with existing trim, flooring and new joinery.

Marmorino

Stone-like matte finish, lightly textured. Calm, architectural.

Marmorino Naturale

Larger aggregate, naturally reflective when burnished.

Stucco Veneziano

High polish, deep movement, mirror-like in raking light.

Polished Plaster

Glass-smooth surface with subtle cloud variation.

Concrete Venetian

Cool grey palette emulating off-form concrete.

Lime Wash

Translucent colour, the softest of the family.

The Why

Why Venetian?

Renovations bring old and new surfaces together. Venetian plaster can give a selected Unley wall continuity and depth, but preparation must respond to the substrate beneath the decorative layers.

  • Naturally antimicrobial — high pH resists mould

  • Breathable — regulates moisture in the wall

  • Low VOC, lime-true and mineral

  • Joint-free across walls, ceilings and joinery

  • Repairs in-place — never re-coats like paint

  • Holds light differently through the day

Applications

Where it
belongs.

A feature wall should make sense within the whole Unley room. We discuss what remains, what is being renovated and where natural or architectural lighting will show the finish at its best.

01

Living & Lounge

A living wall can bridge older detailing and a cleaner contemporary fit-out.

02

Bedrooms & Headboards

A bedroom headboard wall may suit a soft, tactile Marmorino sample.

03

Hallways & Stairwells

A hallway can use a continuous finish to bring together connected rooms.

04

Hospitality & Retail

For a practice or small business interior, the finish can mark a welcoming reception point.

05

Joinery & Furniture

Joinery details are considered only after their substrate and use are reviewed.

06

Exterior Feature Walls

An outside feature needs its own product and exposure assessment rather than an interior specification.

Where we work

Residential.
And
commercial.

Protex works with homeowners, designers and builders across Greater Adelaide, including Unley. We assess each wall and brief before recommending a finish.

Residential

For the home

In an Unley home, we can compare a feature wall against existing cornices, skirtings and adjoining paint. This helps decide whether the plaster should blend into the architecture or become the room’s main material note.

  • New builds with architects

  • Renovations and extensions

  • Heritage restorations

  • Single-room feature applications

Commercial

For the project

For an Unley business, wall location and customer use matter as much as colour. We can prepare samples for reception or display areas and discuss protection and ongoing care.

  • Restaurants and hospitality

  • Retail and showrooms

  • Day spas and wellness

  • Boutique offices

Colour

A natural
palette.

Warm mineral tones may sit well with existing timber and plaster details; a cooler or darker sample changes the emphasis. Judge colour in the actual Unley room, not under showroom lighting alone.

Process

From sample
to finished wall.

A Venetian Plaster Unley project begins with an assessment of the wall. We inspect the current wall, agree the intended sheen and make samples before preparing it. Renovation surfaces may need extra substrate work, which is established before the decorative coats are scheduled.

Site visit

At the Unley site, we review the wall, its light and how the room will be used.

Sampling

Sample boards are compared in the room where the finish will be installed.

Preparation

The existing surface is made suitable before any decorative layers are applied.

Application

Fine coats are applied by hand to reach the agreed texture and sheen.

Sealing

A compatible protective treatment is selected where the specification calls for one.

Compared to

Why not just
paint?

Paint provides an even coating; Venetian plaster makes a hand-worked mineral surface. For the Unley wall, compare the desired depth, substrate, lighting and care requirements before choosing.

Investment

A guide to cost.

Venetian Plaster Unley pricing depends on the actual wall and finish. The amount of repair or levelling beneath an older wall can affect the quote as much as the finish. Protex prices the defined scope after inspecting the surface and confirming the sample.

Care

Living with
Venetian.

Care depends on the chosen finish and the Unley wall’s use. Avoid abrasive or harsh cleaners; Protex explains any sealing and touch-up needs at handover.

  • 1

    Day-to-day
A soft dry cloth. That is all most walls ever need.

  • 2

    Marks and scuffs
A damp microfibre with warm water. Avoid abrasives.

  • 3

    Repairs
We repair in-place. Most marks blend back with a single touch-up visit.

  • 4

    What to avoid
Vinegar, citrus, ammonia and harsh detergents — lime is alkaline.

  • 5

    How it ages
It does not fade like paint. It deepens, slowly, and improves.

Frequently Asked

Questions
we hear.

Pricing is per square metre and varies with finish, surface preparation and access. Marmorino sits in the most accessible range, polished plaster mid to upper, and Stucco Veneziano at the premium end. Every project is quoted on site after a free consultation — sample boards included.

A correctly applied Venetian wall is a lifetime finish. Lime carbonates over years, hardening to stone. The trade experience behind Protex stretches over a decade — walls applied years ago are still in original condition with no maintenance beyond dusting. It does not fade like paint — it deepens.

Microcement. It is the only finish in our range built for true wet areas — showers, bath surrounds, vanity tops and wet-room floors. Applied as a seamless, waterproof system with no grout lines and no joins. Venetian plaster suits dry bathroom walls only — vanity walls, powder rooms and feature walls outside the splash zone.

A single room takes between three and seven days, depending on finish and surface preparation. Most of that time is spent on substrate work and curing — the trowel work itself is the shortest part. We never compress curing time to suit a deadline.

It is different work. Paint coats a surface; Venetian becomes the surface. Venetian can be re-burnished and patched, though hand-applied finishes mean exact colour and texture matching on repairs cannot be guaranteed. It ages with grace, breathes with the room and holds light dynamically through the day. The cost is higher; the lifespan and presence are too.

Yes — with the right preparation. We assess the existing substrate and apply a bonding primer where needed. Heavily textured or failing surfaces may need to be skim-coated first. Every wall is inspected before quote.

Twenty-seven colours in the standard Venetian Plaster collection — warm whites, creams, beiges, taupes, soft greys and deeper tones — each available in three strengths. We colour-match to architects’ specifications and bespoke requests on top of the standard range.

Always. Bespoke sample boards in the actual material are part of every quote. We bring them to your home, in your light, so the colour and finish can be approved in context.

Yes — extensively. Specification documents, sample kits and project files are supplied directly to design studios on request. We work from concept through to handover.

Greater Adelaide as standard — east, north, south, west and inner. The Adelaide Hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula on standard terms. Regional South Australia and interstate projects are quoted with travel separately.
