Hand-applied Venetian plaster finish by Protex Plastering, Adelaide

What It Is

A Craft Of Lime,
Marble And Time.

Venetian plaster is a lime and marble-dust finish, applied by hand in many fine layers and burnished with a steel trowel until the surface holds depth and light.

Originating in Renaissance Venice and refined over five centuries, Venetian plaster, also known as Marmorino, Stucco Veneziano or polished plaster, gives interior walls a depth no paint or wallpaper can match. Each finish is hand-applied in three to seven layers, with the trowel marks themselves becoming part of the surface.

Venetian Plaster Salisbury projects: For a Salisbury project, Protex begins with the wall and its purpose. Samples help choose a hand-applied texture that suits the room before preparation and cost are confirmed.

Planning a Venetian finish in Salisbury

A one-room upgrade works best when the feature wall has a clear job. It might frame seating, make an entry more distinctive or give a reception area a material backdrop. Decide what should draw the eye before choosing a colour or polish level.

Everyday use matters as well. Protex can inspect the surface, discuss whether a matte or polished finish is suitable and explain cleaning or protection needs. Samples viewed on site give a more reliable basis for the quote than photographs alone.

The Family

Six finishes,
one material.

Venetian Plaster Salisbury offers a family of lime and marble-dust finishes. The mineral family includes quiet stone-like Marmorino and higher-polish finishes. Looking at samples in the Salisbury room helps decide how prominent the wall should be.

Marmorino

Stone-like matte finish, lightly textured. Calm, architectural.

Marmorino Naturale

Larger aggregate, naturally reflective when burnished.

Stucco Veneziano

High polish, deep movement, mirror-like in raking light.

Polished Plaster

Glass-smooth surface with subtle cloud variation.

Concrete Venetian

Cool grey palette emulating off-form concrete.

Lime Wash

Translucent colour, the softest of the family.

The Why

Why Venetian?

A selected mineral wall can add depth where flat paint feels too uniform. The benefit in a Salisbury room comes from considered placement and finish choice, not from coating every available surface.

  • Naturally antimicrobial — high pH resists mould

  • Breathable — regulates moisture in the wall

  • Low VOC, lime-true and mineral

  • Joint-free across walls, ceilings and joinery

  • Repairs in-place — never re-coats like paint

  • Holds light differently through the day

Applications

Where it
belongs.

A lounge, entry and customer-facing wall all have different needs. We discuss sightlines, contact with the surface and existing materials before recommending an application.

01

Living & Lounge

A lounge feature can add hand-worked depth while other walls stay simple.

02

Bedrooms & Headboards

A bedroom wall may be better served by a low-sheen, tactile sample.

03

Hallways & Stairwells

An entry feature can be viewed closely and should be detailed with care.

04

Hospitality & Retail

A reception or display wall can support a clear business interior scheme.

05

Joinery & Furniture

Selected joinery needs its own base and protection assessment.

06

Exterior Feature Walls

External features require a separately specified system for their exposure.

Process

From sample
to finished wall.

A Venetian Plaster Salisbury project begins with an assessment of the wall. We identify the wall, inspect the substrate and confirm a sample before scheduling preparation. The visible finish follows those practical steps, with time allowed for each coat.

Site visit

At the Salisbury site, we review the wall, its light and how the room will be used.

Sampling

Sample boards are compared in the room where the finish will be installed.

Preparation

The existing surface is made suitable before any decorative layers are applied.

Application

Fine coats are applied by hand to reach the agreed texture and sheen.

Sealing

A compatible protective treatment is selected where the specification calls for one.

Why not just
paint?

Paint provides an even coating; Venetian plaster makes a hand-worked mineral surface. For the Salisbury wall, compare the desired depth, substrate, lighting and care requirements before choosing.

Care

Living with
Venetian.

Care depends on the chosen finish and the Salisbury wall’s use. Avoid abrasive or harsh cleaners; Protex explains any sealing and touch-up needs at handover.

  • 1

    Day-to-day
A soft dry cloth. That is all most walls ever need.

  • 2

    Marks and scuffs
A damp microfibre with warm water. Avoid abrasives.

  • 3

    Repairs
We repair in-place. Most marks blend back with a single touch-up visit.

  • 4

    What to avoid
Vinegar, citrus, ammonia and harsh detergents — lime is alkaline.

  • 5

    How it ages
It does not fade like paint. It deepens, slowly, and improves.

Frequently Asked

Questions
we hear.

Pricing is per square metre and varies with finish, surface preparation and access. Marmorino sits in the most accessible range, polished plaster mid to upper, and Stucco Veneziano at the premium end. Every project is quoted on site after a free consultation — sample boards included.

A correctly applied Venetian wall is a lifetime finish. Lime carbonates over years, hardening to stone. The trade experience behind Protex stretches over a decade — walls applied years ago are still in original condition with no maintenance beyond dusting. It does not fade like paint — it deepens.

Microcement. It is the only finish in our range built for true wet areas — showers, bath surrounds, vanity tops and wet-room floors. Applied as a seamless, waterproof system with no grout lines and no joins. Venetian plaster suits dry bathroom walls only — vanity walls, powder rooms and feature walls outside the splash zone.

A single room takes between three and seven days, depending on finish and surface preparation. Most of that time is spent on substrate work and curing — the trowel work itself is the shortest part. We never compress curing time to suit a deadline.

It is different work. Paint coats a surface; Venetian becomes the surface. Venetian can be re-burnished and patched, though hand-applied finishes mean exact colour and texture matching on repairs cannot be guaranteed. It ages with grace, breathes with the room and holds light dynamically through the day. The cost is higher; the lifespan and presence are too.

Yes — with the right preparation. We assess the existing substrate and apply a bonding primer where needed. Heavily textured or failing surfaces may need to be skim-coated first. Every wall is inspected before quote.

Twenty-seven colours in the standard Venetian Plaster collection — warm whites, creams, beiges, taupes, soft greys and deeper tones — each available in three strengths. We colour-match to architects’ specifications and bespoke requests on top of the standard range.

Always. Bespoke sample boards in the actual material are part of every quote. We bring them to your home, in your light, so the colour and finish can be approved in context.

Yes — extensively. Specification documents, sample kits and project files are supplied directly to design studios on request. We work from concept through to handover.

Greater Adelaide as standard — east, north, south, west and inner. The Adelaide Hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula on standard terms. Regional South Australia and interstate projects are quoted with travel separately.
