Hand-applied Venetian plaster finish by Protex Plastering, Adelaide

What It Is

A Craft Of Lime,
Marble And Time.

Venetian plaster is a lime and marble-dust finish, applied by hand in many fine layers and burnished with a steel trowel until the surface holds depth and light.

Originating in Renaissance Venice and refined over five centuries, Venetian plaster, also known as Marmorino, Stucco Veneziano or polished plaster, gives interior walls a depth no paint or wallpaper can match. Each finish is hand-applied in three to seven layers, with the trowel marks themselves becoming part of the surface.

Venetian Plaster Prospect projects: For a Prospect project, start with the wall that will benefit most from texture and changing light. The finish is then chosen around the room, rather than the other way around.

Planning a Venetian finish in Prospect

When only one Prospect wall will receive a specialist finish, its boundaries matter. The meeting point with ordinary paint, a doorway or cabinetry can influence how deliberate the result looks. Identify those edges early, then choose the sample that works with them.

Light is another practical test. A low-sheen finish may read as texture from across the room, while a polished finish can show stronger movement up close. Protex can view samples in place and quote the preparation required for the actual surface.

The Family

Six finishes,
one material.

Venetian Plaster Prospect offers a family of lime and marble-dust finishes. A soft Marmorino and a highly polished plaster create different moods from the same mineral family. View each Prospect sample beside the colours and materials already in the room.

Marmorino

Stone-like matte finish, lightly textured. Calm, architectural.

Marmorino Naturale

Larger aggregate, naturally reflective when burnished.

Stucco Veneziano

High polish, deep movement, mirror-like in raking light.

Polished Plaster

Glass-smooth surface with subtle cloud variation.

Concrete Venetian

Cool grey palette emulating off-form concrete.

Lime Wash

Translucent colour, the softest of the family.

The Why

Why Venetian?

A single continuous surface can make an open living area feel more considered. Venetian plaster gives a Prospect feature depth and hand-worked variation while leaving neighbouring walls quieter.

  • Naturally antimicrobial — high pH resists mould

  • Breathable — regulates moisture in the wall

  • Low VOC, lime-true and mineral

  • Joint-free across walls, ceilings and joinery

  • Repairs in-place — never re-coats like paint

  • Holds light differently through the day

Applications

Where it
belongs.

The selected wall might sit behind seating, define a dining zone or draw attention to an entry. We discuss how people see and use it before deciding on texture, sheen and protection.

01

Living & Lounge

A living wall can define one part of an open room with a restrained mineral finish.

02

Bedrooms & Headboards

A bedhead feature can add warmth without busy pattern or seams.

03

Hallways & Stairwells

An entry wall offers a compact place to introduce a more polished sample.

04

Hospitality & Retail

A small business reception can use a durable visual feature with a clear design purpose.

05

Joinery & Furniture

A joinery panel needs a suitable base and careful edge detailing.

06

Exterior Feature Walls

An exterior wall calls for a separately assessed system and exposure conditions.

Where we work

Residential.
And
commercial.

Protex works with homeowners, designers and builders across Greater Adelaide, including Prospect. We assess each wall and brief before recommending a finish.

Residential

For the home

For a Prospect home update, a single wall is often enough to test the design direction. We inspect paint and substrate, compare samples with flooring and joinery, and confirm where the finish will stop.

  • New builds with architects

  • Renovations and extensions

  • Heritage restorations

  • Single-room feature applications

Commercial

For the project

A Prospect business can discuss a display or reception surface as part of a wider interior plan. The right sheen depends on lighting and how close visitors will be to the wall.

  • Restaurants and hospitality

  • Retail and showrooms

  • Day spas and wellness

  • Boutique offices

Process

From sample
to finished wall.

A Venetian Plaster Prospect project begins with an assessment of the wall. We first identify the feature wall and assess its existing surface. The chosen sample sets the target appearance; preparation and layered application follow in a sequence suited to the material.

Site visit

At the Prospect site, we review the wall, its light and how the room will be used.

Sampling

Sample boards are compared in the room where the finish will be installed.

Preparation

The existing surface is made suitable before any decorative layers are applied.

Application

Fine coats are applied by hand to reach the agreed texture and sheen.

Sealing

A compatible protective treatment is selected where the specification calls for one.

Why not just
paint?

Paint provides an even coating; Venetian plaster makes a hand-worked mineral surface. For the Prospect wall, compare the desired depth, substrate, lighting and care requirements before choosing.

Investment

A guide to cost.

Venetian Plaster Prospect pricing depends on the actual wall and finish. A compact wall with many corners can require different work from a large uninterrupted surface. The quote reflects area, preparation, detailing and the chosen level of polish.

Care

Living with
Venetian.

Care depends on the chosen finish and the Prospect wall’s use. Avoid abrasive or harsh cleaners; Protex explains any sealing and touch-up needs at handover.

  • 1

    Day-to-day
A soft dry cloth. That is all most walls ever need.

  • 2

    Marks and scuffs
A damp microfibre with warm water. Avoid abrasives.

  • 3

    Repairs
We repair in-place. Most marks blend back with a single touch-up visit.

  • 4

    What to avoid
Vinegar, citrus, ammonia and harsh detergents — lime is alkaline.

  • 5

    How it ages
It does not fade like paint. It deepens, slowly, and improves.

Frequently Asked

Questions
we hear.

Pricing is per square metre and varies with finish, surface preparation and access. Marmorino sits in the most accessible range, polished plaster mid to upper, and Stucco Veneziano at the premium end. Every project is quoted on site after a free consultation — sample boards included.

A correctly applied Venetian wall is a lifetime finish. Lime carbonates over years, hardening to stone. The trade experience behind Protex stretches over a decade — walls applied years ago are still in original condition with no maintenance beyond dusting. It does not fade like paint — it deepens.

Microcement. It is the only finish in our range built for true wet areas — showers, bath surrounds, vanity tops and wet-room floors. Applied as a seamless, waterproof system with no grout lines and no joins. Venetian plaster suits dry bathroom walls only — vanity walls, powder rooms and feature walls outside the splash zone.

A single room takes between three and seven days, depending on finish and surface preparation. Most of that time is spent on substrate work and curing — the trowel work itself is the shortest part. We never compress curing time to suit a deadline.

It is different work. Paint coats a surface; Venetian becomes the surface. Venetian can be re-burnished and patched, though hand-applied finishes mean exact colour and texture matching on repairs cannot be guaranteed. It ages with grace, breathes with the room and holds light dynamically through the day. The cost is higher; the lifespan and presence are too.

Yes — with the right preparation. We assess the existing substrate and apply a bonding primer where needed. Heavily textured or failing surfaces may need to be skim-coated first. Every wall is inspected before quote.

Twenty-seven colours in the standard Venetian Plaster collection — warm whites, creams, beiges, taupes, soft greys and deeper tones — each available in three strengths. We colour-match to architects’ specifications and bespoke requests on top of the standard range.

Always. Bespoke sample boards in the actual material are part of every quote. We bring them to your home, in your light, so the colour and finish can be approved in context.

Yes — extensively. Specification documents, sample kits and project files are supplied directly to design studios on request. We work from concept through to handover.

Greater Adelaide as standard — east, north, south, west and inner. The Adelaide Hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula on standard terms. Regional South Australia and interstate projects are quoted with travel separately.
