Hand-applied Venetian plaster finish by Protex Plastering, Adelaide

What It Is

A Craft Of Lime,
Marble And Time.

Venetian plaster is a lime and marble-dust finish, applied by hand in many fine layers and burnished with a steel trowel until the surface holds depth and light.

Originating in Renaissance Venice and refined over five centuries, Venetian plaster, also known as Marmorino, Stucco Veneziano or polished plaster, gives interior walls a depth no paint or wallpaper can match. Each finish is hand-applied in three to seven layers, with the trowel marks themselves becoming part of the surface.

Venetian Plaster Modbury projects: A Modbury wall may need preparation before decorative work begins. We compare samples and discuss the intended room use so the finish and scope are realistic.

Planning a Venetian finish in Modbury

A decorative finish can be a focused part of a renovation rather than a whole-home commitment. Decide which wall people notice first and how it connects to the existing colours. That helps choose a sample with purpose instead of selecting the glossiest option by default.

The practical check is the substrate. Loose paint, uneven areas or previous repairs may need work before lime plaster is applied. Protex can review these conditions on site, explain the preparation and quote the finished feature as one scope.

The Family

Six finishes,
one material.

Venetian Plaster Modbury offers a family of lime and marble-dust finishes. A soft matte Marmorino and a polished finish serve different design goals. Samples help a Modbury homeowner decide which belongs beside the room’s existing paint and flooring.

Marmorino

Stone-like matte finish, lightly textured. Calm, architectural.

Marmorino Naturale

Larger aggregate, naturally reflective when burnished.

Stucco Veneziano

High polish, deep movement, mirror-like in raking light.

Polished Plaster

Glass-smooth surface with subtle cloud variation.

Concrete Venetian

Cool grey palette emulating off-form concrete.

Lime Wash

Translucent colour, the softest of the family.

The Why

Why Venetian?

The appeal of Venetian plaster is the depth of a hand-worked mineral surface. In a Modbury update, one selected wall can introduce that material without making the whole room feel over-designed.

  • Naturally antimicrobial — high pH resists mould

  • Breathable — regulates moisture in the wall

  • Low VOC, lime-true and mineral

  • Joint-free across walls, ceilings and joinery

  • Repairs in-place — never re-coats like paint

  • Holds light differently through the day

Applications

Where it
belongs.

Start with the wall that has a clear visual role and a suitable dry location. We inspect its condition, surrounding finishes and access before recommending a texture or sheen.

01

Living & Lounge

A living-room feature can give an existing space a new material focus.

02

Bedrooms & Headboards

A low-sheen bedhead wall can be calm and tactile rather than reflective.

03

Hallways & Stairwells

An entry or hall can make good use of a compact plaster feature.

04

Hospitality & Retail

A small business reception can use a mineral finish as a considered backdrop.

05

Joinery & Furniture

Joinery is included only where its construction supports the specified product.

06

Exterior Feature Walls

An outdoor wall needs an exposure check and an appropriate exterior system.

Where we work

Residential.
And
commercial.

Protex works with homeowners, designers and builders across Greater Adelaide, including Modbury. We assess each wall and brief before recommending a finish.

Residential

For the home

For a Modbury home update, photographs can start the discussion but cannot confirm what lies beneath paint. A site visit checks stability and preparation, then samples show how the finish will work with the room.

  • New builds with architects

  • Renovations and extensions

  • Heritage restorations

  • Single-room feature applications

Commercial

For the project

For a Modbury business, Protex can consider a customer-facing feature wall with an appropriate finish and care plan. The choice is made against actual traffic and lighting.

  • Restaurants and hospitality

  • Retail and showrooms

  • Day spas and wellness

  • Boutique offices

Process

From sample
to finished wall.

A Venetian Plaster Modbury project begins with an assessment of the wall. The first step is assessing the existing wall and agreeing the sample. Any repairs or levelling are established before the decorative coats and curing schedule are set.

Site visit

At the Modbury site, we review the wall, its light and how the room will be used.

Sampling

Sample boards are compared in the room where the finish will be installed.

Preparation

The existing surface is made suitable before any decorative layers are applied.

Application

Fine coats are applied by hand to reach the agreed texture and sheen.

Sealing

A compatible protective treatment is selected where the specification calls for one.

Compared to

Why not just
paint?

Paint provides an even coating; Venetian plaster makes a hand-worked mineral surface. For the Modbury wall, compare the desired depth, substrate, lighting and care requirements before choosing.

Care

Living with
Venetian.

Care depends on the chosen finish and the Modbury wall’s use. Avoid abrasive or harsh cleaners; Protex explains any sealing and touch-up needs at handover.

  • 1

    Day-to-day
A soft dry cloth. That is all most walls ever need.

  • 2

    Marks and scuffs
A damp microfibre with warm water. Avoid abrasives.

  • 3

    Repairs
We repair in-place. Most marks blend back with a single touch-up visit.

  • 4

    What to avoid
Vinegar, citrus, ammonia and harsh detergents — lime is alkaline.

  • 5

    How it ages
It does not fade like paint. It deepens, slowly, and improves.

Frequently Asked

Questions
we hear.

Pricing is per square metre and varies with finish, surface preparation and access. Marmorino sits in the most accessible range, polished plaster mid to upper, and Stucco Veneziano at the premium end. Every project is quoted on site after a free consultation — sample boards included.

A correctly applied Venetian wall is a lifetime finish. Lime carbonates over years, hardening to stone. The trade experience behind Protex stretches over a decade — walls applied years ago are still in original condition with no maintenance beyond dusting. It does not fade like paint — it deepens.

Microcement. It is the only finish in our range built for true wet areas — showers, bath surrounds, vanity tops and wet-room floors. Applied as a seamless, waterproof system with no grout lines and no joins. Venetian plaster suits dry bathroom walls only — vanity walls, powder rooms and feature walls outside the splash zone.

A single room takes between three and seven days, depending on finish and surface preparation. Most of that time is spent on substrate work and curing — the trowel work itself is the shortest part. We never compress curing time to suit a deadline.

It is different work. Paint coats a surface; Venetian becomes the surface. Venetian can be re-burnished and patched, though hand-applied finishes mean exact colour and texture matching on repairs cannot be guaranteed. It ages with grace, breathes with the room and holds light dynamically through the day. The cost is higher; the lifespan and presence are too.

Yes — with the right preparation. We assess the existing substrate and apply a bonding primer where needed. Heavily textured or failing surfaces may need to be skim-coated first. Every wall is inspected before quote.

Twenty-seven colours in the standard Venetian Plaster collection — warm whites, creams, beiges, taupes, soft greys and deeper tones — each available in three strengths. We colour-match to architects’ specifications and bespoke requests on top of the standard range.

Always. Bespoke sample boards in the actual material are part of every quote. We bring them to your home, in your light, so the colour and finish can be approved in context.

Yes — extensively. Specification documents, sample kits and project files are supplied directly to design studios on request. We work from concept through to handover.

Greater Adelaide as standard — east, north, south, west and inner. The Adelaide Hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula on standard terms. Regional South Australia and interstate projects are quoted with travel separately.
