Venetian Plaster Glenelg.

For Glenelg interiors, hand-applied lime plaster brings depth to a feature wall without relying on a printed pattern or a flat paint colour. Choose the finish from samples viewed in the room's own light.

Hand-applied Venetian plaster finish by Protex Plastering, Adelaide

What It Is

A Craft Of Lime,
Marble And Time.

Venetian plaster is a lime and marble-dust finish, applied by hand in many fine layers and burnished with a steel trowel until the surface holds depth and light.

Originating in Renaissance Venice and refined over five centuries, Venetian plaster, also known as Marmorino, Stucco Veneziano or polished plaster, gives interior walls a depth no paint or wallpaper can match. Each finish is hand-applied in three to seven layers, with the trowel marks themselves becoming part of the surface.

Venetian Plaster Glenelg projects: A Glenelg project can range from one dry interior feature wall to a coordinated living area or hallway. The substrate, light and intended sheen guide the sample and preparation before application begins.

Planning a Venetian finish in Glenelg

Glenelg rooms can receive strong natural light, which makes sample placement especially useful. View a proposed finish on the wall it will occupy, then compare it in morning and afternoon light. A pale Marmorino may read differently from a high-polish finish even when both use similar pigments.

Start with the wall’s condition and its role in the room. A dry lounge or entry wall is a different brief from a shower or splash zone, where another finish is needed. Protex can review the existing paint or plaster, make a sample board and quote the preparation alongside the decorative work.

The Family

Six finishes,
one material.

Venetian Plaster Glenelg offers a family of lime and marble-dust finishes. Compare soft Marmorino with a more highly burnished finish in the space itself. A sample board makes the difference in texture and sheen easier to judge than a screen image.

Marmorino

Stone-like matte finish, lightly textured. Calm, architectural.

Marmorino Naturale

Larger aggregate, naturally reflective when burnished.

Stucco Veneziano

High polish, deep movement, mirror-like in raking light.

Polished Plaster

Glass-smooth surface with subtle cloud variation.

Concrete Venetian

Cool grey palette emulating off-form concrete.

Lime Wash

Translucent colour, the softest of the family.

The Why

Why Venetian?

Coastal daylight can make a wall look different from morning to evening. A hand-burnished lime finish gives a Glenelg room subtle movement; the right result depends on the wall, finish and lighting, which we assess before quoting.

  • Naturally antimicrobial — high pH resists mould

  • Breathable — regulates moisture in the wall

  • Low VOC, lime-true and mineral

  • Joint-free across walls, ceilings and joinery

  • Repairs in-place — never re-coats like paint

  • Holds light differently through the day

Applications

Where it
belongs.

In Glenelg, placement matters: select a wall whose light and sightlines let the hand-worked surface be appreciated. Dry living areas, entries and selected business interiors offer different opportunities; wet zones need a different system.

01

Living & Lounge

A broad lounge wall can carry a quiet Marmorino finish without competing with furnishings.

02

Bedrooms & Headboards

Behind a bed, a low-sheen mineral surface adds texture while keeping the room calm.

03

Hallways & Stairwells

Hallway and stair walls deserve samples viewed under both natural and artificial light.

04

Hospitality & Retail

A retail or hospitality feature can use a more polished finish where visitors see it up close.

05

Joinery & Furniture

Fine-grain plaster can connect a wall treatment with a selected joinery feature.

06

Exterior Feature Walls

For an exterior feature, exposure and protection must be assessed before a lime system is chosen.

Where we work

Residential.
And
commercial.

Protex works with homeowners, designers and builders across Greater Adelaide, including Glenelg. We assess each wall and brief before recommending a finish.

Residential

For the home

A Glenelg renovation may need only one feature wall to change a living area. We review the existing surface, prepare samples in the intended finish and discuss how the room is used before setting the scope.

  • New builds with architects

  • Renovations and extensions

  • Heritage restorations

  • Single-room feature applications

Commercial

For the project

For a Glenelg business interior, we can discuss a reception, display or hospitality wall. Finish selection follows the brief, lighting and maintenance needs rather than a default specification.

  • Restaurants and hospitality

  • Retail and showrooms

  • Day spas and wellness

  • Boutique offices

Colour

A natural
palette.

Bright coastal light can shift the look of warm whites, pale stone tones and deeper colours. Review mineral-pigment samples against the room’s flooring and fittings before settling on a palette.

Process

From sample
to finished wall.

A Venetian Plaster Glenelg project begins with an assessment of the wall. The work begins with a site visit and close look at the wall. Sample approval and substrate preparation come before hand-applied layers; curing depends on the chosen finish and site conditions.

Site visit

At the Glenelg site, we review the wall, its light and how the room will be used.

Sampling

Sample boards are compared in the room where the finish will be installed.

Preparation

The existing surface is made suitable before any decorative layers are applied.

Application

Fine coats are applied by hand to reach the agreed texture and sheen.

Sealing

A compatible protective treatment is selected where the specification calls for one.

Why not just
paint?

Paint provides an even coating; Venetian plaster makes a hand-worked mineral surface. For the Glenelg wall, compare the desired depth, substrate, lighting and care requirements before choosing.

Investment

A guide to cost.

Venetian Plaster Glenelg pricing depends on the actual wall and finish. A quote depends on wall area, preparation, access and the level of polish. A site visit and approved sample define the work more accurately than one price per square metre.

Care

Living with
Venetian.

Care depends on the chosen finish and the Glenelg wall’s use. Avoid abrasive or harsh cleaners; Protex explains any sealing and touch-up needs at handover.

  • 1

    Day-to-day
A soft dry cloth. That is all most walls ever need.

  • 2

    Marks and scuffs
A damp microfibre with warm water. Avoid abrasives.

  • 3

    Repairs
We repair in-place. Most marks blend back with a single touch-up visit.

  • 4

    What to avoid
Vinegar, citrus, ammonia and harsh detergents — lime is alkaline.

  • 5

    How it ages
It does not fade like paint. It deepens, slowly, and improves.

Frequently Asked

Questions
we hear.

Pricing is per square metre and varies with finish, surface preparation and access. Marmorino sits in the most accessible range, polished plaster mid to upper, and Stucco Veneziano at the premium end. Every project is quoted on site after a free consultation — sample boards included.

A correctly applied Venetian wall is a lifetime finish. Lime carbonates over years, hardening to stone. The trade experience behind Protex stretches over a decade — walls applied years ago are still in original condition with no maintenance beyond dusting. It does not fade like paint — it deepens.

Microcement. It is the only finish in our range built for true wet areas — showers, bath surrounds, vanity tops and wet-room floors. Applied as a seamless, waterproof system with no grout lines and no joins. Venetian plaster suits dry bathroom walls only — vanity walls, powder rooms and feature walls outside the splash zone.

A single room takes between three and seven days, depending on finish and surface preparation. Most of that time is spent on substrate work and curing — the trowel work itself is the shortest part. We never compress curing time to suit a deadline.

It is different work. Paint coats a surface; Venetian becomes the surface. Venetian can be re-burnished and patched, though hand-applied finishes mean exact colour and texture matching on repairs cannot be guaranteed. It ages with grace, breathes with the room and holds light dynamically through the day. The cost is higher; the lifespan and presence are too.

Yes — with the right preparation. We assess the existing substrate and apply a bonding primer where needed. Heavily textured or failing surfaces may need to be skim-coated first. Every wall is inspected before quote.

Twenty-seven colours in the standard Venetian Plaster collection — warm whites, creams, beiges, taupes, soft greys and deeper tones — each available in three strengths. We colour-match to architects’ specifications and bespoke requests on top of the standard range.

Always. Bespoke sample boards in the actual material are part of every quote. We bring them to your home, in your light, so the colour and finish can be approved in context.

Yes — extensively. Specification documents, sample kits and project files are supplied directly to design studios on request. We work from concept through to handover.
